Night of the Living Memes is a stealth horror game created in a week for a game jam. This game was inspired by the randomly generated theme of "A shooting game where you poison internet memes for a contest." In the group, I was responsible for the creation of some of the models, and graphics, as well as coding the HUD and phone display.
You find yourself awake in an abandoned asylum with no idea of how you arrived here or if this is even reality, all you know is that you want to get out and fast!
Hack computer terminals while avoiding capture from the patrolling robots lurking all around you. There's just one catch - Nyan Cat is out to get you and running is your only way of escaping its clutches.

What's the aim of the game?
The player aims to survive as long as possible in the asylum while progressing through levels of increasing difficulty. They do this through the hacking of numerous computer terminals stationed throughout the asylum.

The dangers of the asylum:
There are several types of enemy within the asylum, including patrolling robots who chase you upon detection and the ever present Nyan Cat robot who relentlessly hunts you down, never leaving you with a moment to spare.

Your only allies are a USB gun to fire out viruses to temporarily subdue the patrolling robots and a mobile phone which provides you with a torch. Be careful though, using your phone for too long will drain its battery and leave you alone in the dark with only robots for company!

About the Game

My role:
In this project, as well as creating some 3D assets, I also took the role as the User Interface Creator and both designed the graphics used on the HUD as well as coded it to link up with the other systems my fellow group members were working on.

The user interface consisted of both the HUD and a phone display. The HUD allows the player to see how much ammunition they have available, their current score, and when they are able to exit the level.
The phone is used in this game to display key pieces of information that could potentially relate to the in-game character you play us, such as the Nyan-ometer which visually shows you how close Nyan Cat is, how many terminals you have remaining to hack, how long you've been in the asylum, and the battery level of the phone.

Play if you dare

Shows HUD created by me with hint message to tell player what to do

Find terminals in the game by hearing out for the music and spotting their lit up screens

Hack the terminals to unlock the exit - beware when Nyan Cat is on the prowl!

Use the Nyanometer on the phone (created by me) to see how close you are to impending doom!

Once a terminal is hacked, you are prompted to find the exit

Nyan Cat will chase you faster and faster as time progresses

Find the right exit door and you're free from the asylum - or are you?
